A very nice lady from Emmett, Idaho gave us a call to come see if we could restore her floors to their original look. When we got there she stated many times she could not stand the the red stain the previous owner had applied to the floor. She also stated there were a few other minor issues she wanted fixed. One of those issues to be fixed were to replace a few boards that had chunks of wood missing that would not sand out. We assured her that all her concerns were able to be fixed and the floor would have a dramatic difference once done. Below shows the before and after pictures.
As you can see in the photos the stain was a very deep red and when finished we left behind a beautiful southern red oak hardwood floor. You will also notice that it is impossible to see what boards we fixed were, they fit seamlessly in with the original floor.
Our Process for this Floor
- Belt sand at 20 degress with 40 grit to get old stain/finish off the floor and flatten it
- Belt sand again at straight with the grain
- Belt sand with 60 grit
- Edge with 60 grit
- Trio with 60 grit
- Trio with 100 grit
- Edge with 100 grit
- Waterpop the wood
- Apply the finish
We had to use the 40 grit belts (very rough) to get under the stained floor and the old sun damaged finish floor. The belt sander at 20 degree cuts gets the floor back to a flat feel and prepares it to use the Trio. The Trio was used to further flatten the floor and give it a very smooth feeling only a Trio or a planetary head can give a floor. Finally, we water popped the floor as it gives the floor the best canvas for the finish to be applied on.
