Oak is a very traditional hardwood. It has been used for centuries from the most rustic of homes to the most extravagant castles. TO this day oak is one of the most common and in demand hardwoods for its durability and long life. Oak has many grain patterns, lots of character and beautiful natural color. Both species of oak red and white oak are considered a “green” option since it is readily available in the united states.
There are a variety of different oak species, however, the most common are red and white oak.
Red Oak:

- more pronounced grain
- accepts stain well
White Oak:
- golden tones
- finer grains
- longer rays
- accepts stain very well
- very stable
- janka hardness of 1360
Each, white and red oak are very hard and stable hardwoods that can be stained and will be long lasting. It mainly comes down to the color you would like. If you want your floor to have a more red feel then red oak should be your choice, if it is more of a pale golden color, white should be your choice.
