This house had Canadian Birch installed around 7-8 years prior and it appeared to have some moisture issues. These issues were apparently fixed and the homeowners wanted the hardwood flooring to be refinished. Birch is a very soft wood and dents easily compared to red oaks and hickory. The dents and scratching that is common in birch can be seen below. The pantry and in front of the fridge were badly worn. The homeowner was worried they would not come out at all but we assured them over 95% of it would come out. I am happy to say 100% of dents did come out.
The house was 900 sq. Ft. ad took a little over 3 days to complete. The process of which we did things at this house in Meridian, Idaho is below.
Sanding/Finishing Process
- Belt sand at 60 grit
- Edge at 60 grit
- Vacuum
- Fill
- Trio at 60 grit
- Vacuum
- Edge at 100 grit
- Trio at 100 grit
- Vacuum
- Waterpop
- Glitsa coat #1
- Glitsa coat #2
- Bona Traffic coat #1
- Bona Traffic coat #2
Normally we do a 1 coat Glitsa, but the homeowner was out of the house for a full week allowing us time to do 2 coats and giving them a much deeper build with a nicer finish overall. If a homeowner can afford a 2nd Glitsa coat and can be out of the house 1 extra night it is well worth it. The floors look richer, deeper and more clear from using 2 coats Glitsa.

Conclusion
The owners of the house were pleasantly surprised with the outcome and did not expect every dent and scratch to come out. Their words were “this looks better than when we had it first installed even”. They will be selling their house in the coming months and it should help their home sell much quicker with it looking in pristine condition.
