Did you know that American and Brazilian cherry hardwood floors change color when refinishing them? Cherry wood will darken from the first day it is refinished/installed till it is over 100 years old! The color changes from a pale looking red under tone on day 1 to a black color after 100 years. Usually within 3-6 months you will get 50% of your color back however. You can see how the floor changes color here: **The floor was around 12 years old
You can see the floor prior to sanding below:
The installation of new cherry matched almost perfectly to the old floor and was almost unnoticeable where it was installed. Our sanding process used on this job was the following:
- 40 grit hummel belt sander
- vacuum
- 80 grit edger
- 60 grit trio
- vacuum
- 100 grit trio
- vacuum
- 120 grit trio
- vacuum
We used a SunFinish finish for the wood. Sunfinish gives the wood a very natural look and is superior for clarity. The wood grains are able to be seen easily through the finish. You can read more about SunFinish here: https://www.a-maxhardwood.com/blog/sunfinish-uv-ultra-violet-finishes
The process for SunFinish is as follows:
- Bond coat
- Buff
- Bodybuilder coat
- Buff
- Finish UV Coat
The After Pictures are Below:
The gloss level used on this wood was a semi-gloss. We find that semi-gloss allows the wood to really “pop” vs a normal satin sheen.
