A-Max Hardwood is always looking for the best coatings to present to our customers. We recently came upon a very new technology that is by far the best coating there is to offer. We have been in business for 15 years and there is nothing that compares to the lifespan and durability as this product. We know this from testing for a few months at a few test houses and also talking to many contractors around the United States about their experiences with the product for the last 6-8 years. UV floor coatings have been around for about 9 years in a few different forms and really hit the market about 6-8 years ago for floors. The idea behind UV cured coatings is that they are instantly able to be used as a fully cured floor. There is no need to wait for the sun to dry the floor or the fumes to go away, you can put your rugs, furniture and other belongings back on the floor once we leave. The Benefits of UV Hardwood Floor Coatings
Ultra Violet floor coatings for hardwood have a few main features that put the other acid cure, waterbased, polys, or oil finishes behind in the race. These qualities are:
- Instantly cured to be walk on and used
- 2-3x lifespan of waterbased products
- 100% healthy with no toxicity after it is UV cured
- Very low VOC on application (40-50 VOC!)
- Very clear to allow you to see the grain of the wood as intended
I have yet to see a downside of the product besides maybe it is a bit harder to apply vs a waterbased product. But, that is just because it takes time to get use to new products. Now that we have 4-5 applications I can confidently say we have no issues with application and it looks by far better than any waterbased product we have used at A-Max Hardwood.
How the UV Coated Hardwood Floors are Cured
This is the coolest technology you can find in hardwood refinish today. The coatings are applied like normal but they go on pink. Yes, they go on pink! After about 2 hours you then get out your UV machine from HID. This Machine has a very powerful UV light that cured the floor. This powerful light makes the finish bond and zaps any water out of the coating thus curing it! ( I am sure there is more than that simple description but I am not a chemist.) — Below is a picture of the machine in action & the pink finish being applied prior to being uv’d:
